Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is why we’re here. This is not an accident or a hobby. Our migration to NZ, and Central Otago specifically, was motivated by opportunity to take part in something special and emerging. While we are still learning to maximize the potential of this region and our vineyard, there is clearly an affinity to Pinot Noir. Our vineyard’s personality is making itself known through our wines more clearly each year. Across our vintages of Pinot Noir, a fragrant aroma reminiscent of potpourri (dried flowers with a hint of wild herbs) stands out, along with fine-grained tannins and a silky structure.

2014 "Pisa Terrace Vineyard" Pinot Noir, suggested retail is $45/bottle

Our 2014 Pinot Noir is quite elegant and polished even in its youth, unusual for our vineyard. An intriguing minerality underlies the wine, defining a nice purity that leans towards the red side of the fruit spectrum. Deep plum and spice flavours, combined with an earthy streak, add to good complexity. A silky richness on the palate makes it quite approachable.

This charming Pinot displays fragrant aromas of dark cherry, plum, mixed spice and floral on the nose with hints of cedar and mushrooms. The palate delivers attractive fruit intensity and elegant mid palate weight, beautifully complemented by silky texture and polished tannins. The wine is rounded and supple, and offers delightful complexity. At its best: now to 2020.

Complex and integrating bouquet of light red fruits, mineral and savoury highlight, mushroom, old roses, brown spices and undergrowth. On the palate – tense, youthful, fine light red fruit flavours, cool climate tannins – chalky and savoury; plenty of acidity and lengthy complex finish. This wine will reward with correct cellaring. Drink now and through 2026.

2014 Vintage

The 2014 growing season was marked by an unusually long interval between flowering and harvest, dominated by a cool and rainy weather pattern. It started quite early, with dry conditions and anxious frosty mornings, then settled into warmer temps. Flowering occurred in mid December, with cooler weather and rain setting in, contributing to an unusually long time before fruit set. January continued with the cool and rainy weather pattern, which finally gave way to warmer temps near Harvest. Our vigilant control of the canopy, exposing the fruit and removing excess growth, meant that we were successful in staying ahead of disease pressure. Come Harvest, we experienced sunny skies and warm temps, and were able to harvest grapes in optimal condition.

2012 "Pisa Terrace Vineyard" Pinot Noir, suggested retail is $40/bottle

Our 2012 Pinot Noir is dark -fruited and concentrated, similar to the 2010 vintage, a result of uniformly small berries and grape bunches. This translates into intense floral, plum/cherry, exotic spice and savory whole-cluster aromatics. The palate offers ample juicy fruit and textural weight reflecting the aromatics, supported by a firm tannin structure and vibrant acidity. We’re especially pleased by the depth the wine shows and its aging potential.

Romance in a glass - there really is somehting speial about the wines of Ellero - particularly the Pinot Noir - a signature of minerality, vibrant light red fruit and specific oak choice all in harmony - yet youthful enough still to know there is development ahead. On the palate - tense and poised with a vibrant youthfulness that demands cellar time.

Sourced from the Pisa District of the region, this is quite a bold, brassy and generously fruited Pinot Noir that has plenty of ripe, glossy red fruits, loads of cherry and perfumed lift. The palate has a wealth of deep and juicy fruit that delivers an opulent middle palate, toasty oak rolls through the finish, good tannin, all very young still.
